Power development in India commenced at the end of the 19th century with the commissioning of electricity supply in Darjeeling during 1897. Nuclear power is one of the largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydro-electric and renewable sources of electricity. India’s and Asia’s first nuclear reactor was the Apsara research reactor. The domestic uranium reserve in India is small and is dependent on uranium imports to fuel its nuclear power industry.
